[Download Resume] I have a strong background in mathematics, software engineering and data science, with a focus on complex software systems, data processing, data mining, and deep learning. Currently I am a software engineer at Google, where I use machine learning to create tools that enable content creators from filtering undesirable ads on their sites. Previously I worked at Castlight Health, first as a web developer and later in data mining, reverse engineering prices of healthcare services from claims. I have also traded equity options on Wall Street and taught science to high schoolers.
If I ever quit my awesome Google job, it would be either to build an awesome product from scratch, or to go back and get my Ph.D. / do some research. I am open to interesting projects in any field; however, currently I am most interested in applications of deep learning and other data mining techniques to biology, as well as questions of model understanding and ML fairness.
I build machine learning-powered tools for publishers to filter ads that show on their websites. I work with the full stack from data collection and human ratings all the way through the serving infrastructure, but mostly I build models - both linear and neural networks.
I also lead women@Google - SoCal, focusing on community outreach. In other words, I run events to teach coding to LA-area kids (mostly, but not exclusively girls).
I started as a web developer but then moved to the analytics team. My projects included reverse engineering claims data to predict pricing of future doctor visits, as well as designing analytical tools to measure and drive behavior change.
I tutored high school kids in STEM subjects, and taught physics and chemistry summer school classes.
I managed a portfolio of equity options, as well as worked on developing algorithms to eventually take over much of my job.
I studied pure mathematics, concentrating on algebra, topology, and discrete math. The coding classes were very intense and I was a complete neophyte so I only took a few. So basically I knew what a Turing machine was years before writing a successful >1000 line program.
I was Valedictorian, so, you know, be impressed. But seriously, my favorite classes were French, history, and art; I didn’t realize how much I liked math until I went to college and discovered the Apostol books on calculus. I still think about this a lot and it really makes me think about how we can do a better job teaching math at this level, and how I can help with that.
